The Mount Vernon Mill.
They are unrivalled for their quality and craftsmanship of duck canvas.
They are one of the oldest duck canvas makers in the world.
In 1870, a fabric supplier, you may have heard of him – Levi Strauss sent Jacob W. Davis, a tailor from Reno, Nevada some rugged duck canvas to make a pair of robust trousers that could be worn whilst working outside.
The duck canvas for these trousers came from the Mount Vernon Mill in Maryland.
That’s right.
Before the denim jeans that we know and love, there was duck canvas.
The name duck canvas does not in fact refer to the waterfowl that populate every pond side in the UK, it actually comes from the Dutch word ‘doek’ which means linen canvas.
Duck canvas was historically used in the making of ship sails.
So it needed to be strong.
Think Hulk-like strength. And weatherproof. Snag proof.
That incredible strength comes from its tight 1X1 plain weave.
Oh boy, it’s tough.
But unlike the original fabric used for making sails, our duck canvas is super soft.
And with each wash, it just gets softer.
